Check descriptions and links for deadlines: French: The Department of Romance Languages offers three scholarships for French-language study abroad in a French-speaking country. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Georgia, and preference will be given to French majors and minors as well as Romance Languages majors with French as their primary language. No more than one scholarship will be awarded per study abroad experience. The Joel Walz Study Abroad Scholarship, endowed by Professor Emeritus Joel Walz, provides support up to $1,000 for the study of French language, literature, linguistics, and/or culture in metropolitan (continental) France or Quebec. To qualify for a scholarship from this fund, a student must enroll in a study abroad program administered by a United States university that will give course credit at the University of Georgia. Applicants must have completed the first two years of college French (or the equivalent) before the study abroad program begins. The Meredith Hope Emerson Memorial Award provides support up to $1,000 for study abroad, with preference given to former residents of the French Language Community. Meredith Hope Emerson (1983-2008) was an outstanding student of French language, literature, and culture and recipient of the 2005 Cecil Willcox Award for Excellence in French. An officer of the University of Georgia's chapter of the French National Honor Society (Pi Delta Phi), Meredith received the Joseph Yedlicka Scholarship for Study Abroad awarded by Pi Delta Phi in 2004. She was also a resident of the French Language Community during the academic year 2003-2004. Out of esteem and affection for her, faculty and students created an award that celebrates her love for and excellence in the study of French language and culture.
