Global Languages and Leadership Co-Major

New for Fall '25, Global Languages and Leadership is a co-major in UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. A GLL AB combines advanced proficiency in a second (and perhaps third) language attained through a language major with professional fields in private industry and public sectors. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor in your chosen language, you will gain real-world expertise to design and implement a leadership capstone project focused on a 21st century problem.

Welcome to UGA Romance Language's program in French and Francophone Studies. In addition to French language courses, we offer a wide variety of classes that address global Francophonie, or French-speaking regions around the world.  With excellent language skills and training in literature, media, culture, history and politics, our French and French Studies majors graduate well-equipped to enter a variety of professional schools and careers.

Italian

Studying the beautiful Italian language grants students access to one of the world’s most significant artistic, cultural, and historical patrimonies.  UGA’s Italian section offers Italian language training and a variety of courses in literature, film and cultural studies which prepare our majors for careers as global citizens.  Immerse yourself in UGA’s Cortona Center, in the heart of Tuscany, to widen your intellectual and cultural horizons.

Portuguese

Students of Portuguese at UGA gain excellent language skills and training in the literature, media, culture, history, and politics of the fascinating and diverse Luso-Brazilian world.  Our Romance Languages majors with a focus on Portuguese, graduate with a unique set of skills that prepare students for professional school in law or medicine, graduate school, and a broad spectrum of career pathways in public and private sector employment.

Spanish

Explore the inner workings of the Spanish language, its rich literary traditions, and many cultures through our diverse course offerings.  Immerse yourself through our residential Learning Community, study abroad in Spain or Latin America, and Service Learning courses in the community.  Our majors pursue internationally oriented careers as scholars, teachers, writers, and business people, while also applying their language fluency in public service.

Romance Languages

Set yourself apart with Italian or Portuguese, or become trilingual by combining two languages, including French and Spanish, in a single major.  Our faculty will guide you in effective intercultural understanding as you become a confident communicator with an expanded worldview.  Excellent social skills combined with multi-faceted knowledge of international perspectives lead Romance Languages students to meaningful career pathways with creative and upward trajectories.
